| 25th/26th July 2009 - High Peak Cup | The Hillmen gained a creditable result on Saturday, against a Buxton side 2 divisions higher than them, but unfortunately bowed out of the High Peak Cup semi final on penalties after a 0-0 draw. In front of a terrific pre-season crowd of 397, the visitors had had the better of the first half, missing a number of clear opportunities. The second half was more even, as Glossop kept the ball better than previously. Both sides had chances to win it, although the more hairy moments were in the Glossop goalmouth, Dave Young having to scoop one ball over the bar from off the line.
In the end, Glossop lost the penalty shoot out 4-3, having missed their first two spot kicks.
That defeat meant Glossop played Chapel Town on finals day on Sunday, and were probably disappointed to draw 2-2. Mickey Goddard and Jay Gorton got the North End goals, but tenacious Chapel, inspired by a superb performance by their keeper, refused to be unbowed and grabbed a leveller in the second half. Time constraints on changing room use meant that a penalty shoot out was not possible, so the team shared 3rd place. Rumours that the result meant that Chapel came third on alphabetical order were unfounded!
Buxton beat New Mills 4-2 in the final to take the trophy, in atrocious playing conditions.
The big kick off on 8th August looms large now, and North End have just two more pre-season games to stake their claim for a place in the side. On Saturday they travel to Market Drayton, newly promoted to the Unibond League. Glossop supporters are treating this as a day out, and a coach is leaving the ground at 12pm. Then on Tuesday, Mossley are the visitors to Surrey Street for a local derby.
Mossley are also Unibond level opposition for Steve Young's charges, which will mean that in 7 pre-season games, 6 will have been against opposition at a higher level. Penalty shoot out apart, the Hillmen are unbeaten, and the manager will be keen to ensure that statistic is still in place when Ashton Athletic visit for that first NWCFL game on August 8th. | | 18th July 2009 - Glossop North End 2 Chasetown 2 | | Glossop remained unbeaten in their pre-season build up with their 3rd match against opposition from a higher league, thanks to a late headed goal from Nick Allen. North End had taken the lead in the 15th minute with Dave Young scoring from the penalty spot after Mark Balfe had been brought down. Chasetown hit back after the break and were level on 62 minutes with a strike from Danny Smith. Chasetown went in front on 85 minutes with a low shot from Harry Harris beating Stuart Williams. It looked like Chasetown would hang on for the victory until an excellent passing move from North End ended with Tom Bailey crossing from the right and Nick Allen headed down into the corner to make it 2-2. Glossop North End are back in training and determined that this season they will be picking up silverware, rather than becoming nearly men.
Last season's run to the FA Vase final, which ended in a 2-0 defeat at Wembley, has whetted the Hillmen appetite for success, and Manager Steve Young is determined to build on those events and launch a concerted effort on the Vodkat Premier League title.
The majority of last years squad have already signed on to play for the Hillmen in 2009/10, which a just a handful on holiday, or considering their options. Rick Bailey and Kelvin Lugsden are definitely on board, as the picture (attached) confirms, as they model North End merchandise with manager Steve Young - gear that can all be bought at the North End stall on Glossop market every saturday.
Young's side have also found out who they will be playing in the initial stages of the season, after the FA Cup and first NWCFL fixtures were released. They open their league campaign on August 8th with a home match against Ashton Athletic, before a Tuesday night away match at Ramsbottom. Then, on 15 August, they must travel to Formby as the World's oldest cup competition gets underway. Win that tie, and they will be away again two weeks later, at either Rossington Main or Maltby Main.
Season tickets for the upcoming season are available by contacting club secretary Peter Hammond on 01457 863852 or gnefc@hotmail.com. It is also hoped they will be available on the club stall shortly. They are priced at £95.00 for adults and £40 for OAPS and juniors. Firstly Gorton was awarded the Players’ Player of the Year by the management team of Steve Young and Terry Hincks, having garnered the votes of more than 75% of his team-mates. Shortly afterwards popular Glossop lad Gorton was off his feet again to pick up the Supporters’ Player of the Year, this award presented by fan Mark Stewart, who had attended some 50 Hillmen games in the season. North End correspondent Jonathan Haggart was delighted for Gorton, stating “Jason has had a magnificent season at the heart of the midfield, protecting the defence with tough tackling and straightforward passing. He is a manager’s dream, because he listens to his instructions and carries them out to the letter. “ Meanwhile, the reserve team celebrated their league and cup double on the evening, with their Manager’s player of the year being awarded to Ashley Smallwood, whilst Players’ Player of the year went to Antony Trucca. The ladies team also had their presentation, with Donna Bradbury scooping the main award in the year she retires from the game. She was also given a long service award along with fellow retiree Linda Cooke, although team manager Graham Dockerty has not given up hope of coaxing a further season out of either of the players.
