THE FA VASE FINAL – MINUTE BY MINUTE by Ian Templeman (VODKAT League)

minute - Glossop in a change strip of all white with blue trim kick off in bright sunshine against Whitley Bay who are in blue and white stripes with blue shorts and socks.  Glossop are playing from right to left in front of the Royal Box, and attacking the end where the Whitley Bay supporters are located.

minutes – Dave Hodges makes a break down left, and plays the ball into Rick Bailey, whose shot is blocked and the ball trickles harmlessly towards Whitley Bay keeper Terry Burke, who collects easily

minutes – A surging run by Bailey is blocked by Bay’s Lee Coulson, and wins Glossop a free kick midway inside the Bay half.  When the ball is played in, Darren Hamilton’s overhead kick flies wide of the far post.

minutes – The first corner of the game is won when Hamilton sweeps the ball wide to Morris, whose cross is deflected out, but when the corner comes in Bay keeper Burke collects easily.

minutes – Bay win a corner at the other end when Lee Kerr’s shot is deflected.  Kerr takes it himself and finds the head of his skipper Dave Coulson, but Matt Cooper in the Glossop goal collects the header before being barged to the ground by Adam Johnston.

minutes – The ball is swept wide to Bay’s Adam Johnston, whose cross hits Kelvin Lugdsen and goes out for a corner, but when the kick comes in the referee blows for a foul on Danny Yates.

minutes - Darren Hamilton is tripped on the left edge of penalty area, and Dave Young comes over from the right back position to take the free kick right footed, but blasts it straight into the two man wall.

minutes – Bay’s Paul Chow is pushed in the back by Danny Yates, and from the free kick 30 yards out, Damon Robson heads over.

minutes – Bay’s Adam Johnston almost scores a memorable goal.  Picking up the ball 5 yards inside his own half, he spots Cooper off his line and launches a tremendous shot that Cooper does well to get back to pushed on to the crossbar.

minutes – It’s Glossop’s turn to hit the woodwork, when Nick Allen picks up a loose ball in midfield, and as the defence backs off he unleashes 25 yarder that rebounds off the bar with the Bay keeper Terry Burke looking on.

minutes - Lee Kerr is clearly the Whitley Bay dead ball specialist, with every free kick being left to him, and this time his well struck 25 yarder goes over the defensive wall and into the waiting arms of Cooper.

minutes – Straight up the other end, and Dave Young and Rick Bailey combine to put Darren Hamilton free on the right flank, but his cross across the face of goals evades attackers and defenders alike

minutes - Rick Bailey picks up loose ball in midfield and advances towards the penalty area but having made space for the shot, it’s blocked by a defender.

minutes – The ever dangerous Lee Kerr swings in a corner kick, which Cooper claims ahead of Adam Johnston who is in close attendance.

minutes – Dave Young is getting down the right wing at every opportunity, and plays a ball down the line to Darren Hamilton, who cuts inside and a fires in a shot that is gathered by Bay keeper Burke low down at the left hand post.

minutes – A telling point in the game.  Dave Morris finds Dave Hodges in space, and he curls a left footed shot towards goal that is grabbed by keeper Burke.

minutes – The opening goal arrives.  From the keeper’s clearance, play moves to the Glossop half and Lee Kerr picks up the ball on the right hand edge of penalty area.  He plays the ball through a gap between two defenders Kelvin Lugsden and Jamie Kay and as the two collide Kerr reacts quickly to race through and bury a shot past Cooper from 8 yards.

minutes – A physio enters the field for the first time in the game as Rick Bailey needs treatment after a heavy challenge.  While play is stopped, every player on both sides apart from the two keepers takes the opportunity to have a drink before play restarts.

minutes – Nick Allen plays a ball through to Rick Bailey, who gets into the box and twists and turns to make space before firing a low shot across the face of goal.

minutes - A surging run forward by Dave Young leads to him looking to find Dave Hodges in space wide left with a cross field pass, but Young puts too much pace on the ball.

minutes – Disaster for Glossop after a spell of sustained pressure.  As one minute added time is signalled by fourth official Graham Scott, Dave Hodges sets up Rick Bailey whose shot is blocked by Bay’s Damon Robson.  The ball is cleared upfield, and Bay break quickly down the right.  Paul Chow makes a great run through the middle, and collects a through ball with a great first touch before firing in a shot that Cooper got a hand to, but couldn’t prevent from reaching the back of the net.  The game restarts for a couple of seconds for Glossop to kick off and then the referee blows for half time.

minutes – The first attack of note after the break is created by Whitley Bay, when Adam Johnston makes space down left, cuts inside and fires in a low shot that is comfortably saved by Cooper.

minutes – Bay come forward once more, as Chris Moore plays the ball wide to Paul Chow on the right, who jinks into the box and sees his shot deflected over for a corner.

minutes – Jamie Kay and Darren Hamilton link up to set up a chance for Rick Bailey, who just fails to keep the ball under control and the keeper gathers gratefully.

minutes – The best Glossop chance of the second half so far.  Hodges and Hamilton link up on the left, Hamilton’s shot is blocked and the ball falls into the path of Jay Gorton who sends a wel struck effort wide from 30 yards.

minutes – Glossop manager Steve Young decides to make the first substitution of the afternoon as Sam Hind comes on for Rick Bailey.

minutes – A good chance for Whitley Bay, created by a surging run from Craig McFarlane who squares to Adam Johnston who has a clear shot at goal, but Matt Cooper makes a great blocking save.

minutes – Whitley Bay make a double substitution with Chris Fawcett and Phil Bell coming on for Craig McFarlane and Adam Johnston, and with play stopped the outfield players on both sides turn the delay into an impromptu water break.

minutes – Bay’s Chris Moore shows terrific pace down the right to glide past Jamie Kay and play a ball in towards into Paul Chow, who tries unsuccessfully to connect with a backheel.

minutes – Bay attack down the left with substitute Chris Fawcett making a break but his cross from the bye line is safely held by Cooper.

minutes – Glossop make a second substitution, with Mark Balfe coming on for Nick Allen.

minutes - Chris Moore once again gets up a full head of steam as he sprints down the  right, and is halted by Jamie Kay which results in the first yellow card of the game being issued.  From the resulting free kick fired in at pace from Lee Kerr, Paul Chow’s header rebounds off the underside of the crossbar and is cleared to safety.

minute - Kerr is challenged right on the edge of box and wins a free kick which he takes himself, but curls it wide of the far post.

minutes – The attendance is announced over Wembley’s incredibly loud PA system - 12,212.

minutes – Chris Moore on the right flank seems to have discovered new reserves of energy, as another terrific run sees him outpace the Glossop back line and finish with a shot that Cooper turns round the post for a corner.

minutes – When the corner comes in, the ball is headed back across the face of goal to Paul Chow, who is unmarked on the back post, but incredibly he heads over from two yards out.

minutes – the final substitutions are made. Tom Bailey comes on for Darren Hamilton and Bay bring on Paul Robinson for Paul Chow, a slightly surprising move given the problems Chow had been causing the Glossop defence, and he acknowledges the rousing reception he is given by the Whitley Bay supporters.

minutes – A corner for Whitley Bay is swung in by Chris Moore, and Leon Ryan heads over from 10 yards.

minutes – Mark Balfe dinks a ball through to Dave Hodges arrowing in from left, and in a one on one confrontation with keeper Burke Hodges goes for a chip shot which lands on top of the net.

minutes – Play swings immediately to the other end and Bay’s Phil Bell beats Danny Yates in a chase for the ball, but Yates recovers to concede a corner which is eventually headed harmlessly wide by Whitley Bay captain Dave Coulson.

minutes - With the pace of the game slowing noticeably, the referee takes the unusual step of stopping play for a water break, which players on both sides accept gratefully, and it takes three impatient blasts of the referee’s whistle before both sides take up positions and resume play.

minutes – A Glossop chance that could have made a big difference to the run of play in the remaining minutes.  Hodges makes space down the left and fires in a shot that Bay keeper Burke fails to hold.  As Mark Balfe nearly gets on the end of the loose ball, it falls to Tom Bailey whose goalbound effort is blocked and then cleared to safety.

minutes – A near miss at the other end when Damon Robson narrowly misses getting a touch to a cross from Leon Ryan that is eventually deflected for a corner.

minutes – A Dave Hodges corner for Glossop is aimed at Tom Bailey but is cleared away by the head of a Bay defender.

minutes - As Glossop commit men forward they leave themselves exposed at the back, and when Lee Kerr wins the ball in a challenge, his pass plays Chris Moore through on goal, but Cooper blocks the shot and the rebound is headed over by Chris Fawcett.

minutes – The eardrum perforating PA system is cranked up once more to announce Whitley Bay’s Lee Kerr has been nominated as the sponsors’ Man of the Match.

minutes – Another chance for Glossop as a cross into box towards Sam Hind is cleared wide for a corner, and when Dave Young swings the ball in Mark Balfe’s header  is hacked away a yard off the line by a Bay defender.

minutes – Sam Hind feeds the ball wide to Dave Hodges who blasts a shot against Phil Bell which seems a good shout for a penalty, but appeals are waved away by the referee.  Play continues and Young’s cross is acrobatically volleyed over the bar by Balfe from 15 yards.

minutes – The fourth official signals 4 minutes added time.

minutes + 1 – Glossop continue to press and once again Hodges beats his man and is in on goal, but he scuffs his shot low along the ground and keeper collects the ball comfortably.

minutes + 2 – a good break by Bay’s Chris Fawcett sets up a chance for fellow substitute Paul Robinson, but the ball is nicked off his toe as he shaped to shoot.

minutes + 3 – Yet another Glossop chance created by Hodges on the left, whose pass to Tom Bailey is squared back into the path of Dave Morris who fires a shot just wide.

minutes + 4 - Hodges has a final flourish as he switches sides and collects a ball wide on the right and fires a low cross that zips across the edge of the six yard box without a player from either side getting a touch on the ball.  It’s the last action of the game as the referee blows for full time once play is restarted.
